GIPHY Capture was one of the most popular GIF recorders for Mac, but it was discontinued in 2017 and removed from the Mac App Store. It has not been updated for Apple Silicon, so it requires Rosetta 2 to run on modern Macs -- and Apple may drop Rosetta support in a future macOS release.
GIPHY Capture also limits recordings to 30 seconds. QuikGIF has no time limit, runs natively on Apple Silicon, is actively maintained, and is available on the Mac App Store.
Gifox is a well-designed GIF recorder with a free tier and a $5 paid version. However, the free tier limits recordings to 10 seconds and adds a watermark to your GIFs. You need to pay to remove these restrictions.
QuikGIF is a one-time purchase with no time limits, no watermarks, and no subscriptions. It also includes a CLI tool, scripting engine, and MCP server for AI integration, which Gifox does not offer.
Kap is an open-source screen recorder built with Electron. It supports GIF export and is free to use. However, it is not available on the Mac App Store and has not seen a release since 2023.
QuikGIF is a native Swift app with lower resource usage and faster performance than Electron-based alternatives. It also provides a command-line tool and a scripting engine for automated GIF creation, which Kap does not have.
CleanShot X is a full-featured screenshot and screen recording tool priced at $29 (one-time). It handles GIF recording along with screenshots, video, scrolling capture, and annotation. It is an excellent tool if you need the full suite.
If your primary need is GIF recording, QuikGIF provides a focused, affordable alternative at a fraction of the price. It includes features CleanShot X lacks, such as pause/resume during GIF recording, a CLI tool, a scripting engine, and an MCP server for AI-assisted workflows.
No time limits. No watermarks. No subscriptions.
